A minimum of 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
