The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
