Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
