Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
