Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain calls from the official, following the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
